Business Process Outsourcing(BPO) is when a certain operations of a company are outsourced to a third party. Presently in India BPO is concerned generally with Customer Care Service and handling the call based operations like dealing with clients of a company over phone or internet. BPO has been a major phenomenon in India in the recent years. In fact it has been the biggest reason in providing the huge boost in the Indian economy. So many jobs have been created in India with BPO industry. Infact it would be no exaggeration to say that besides software industry, BPO has been the biggest cause of India becoming a major economic force in the world.
The cause of India being of special interest to countries like USA, UK for outsourcing is its skilled manpower with good knowledge of Spoken English Language at much lesser price than their foreign counterparts. Besides that state policies being globalization and liberalization friendly has proved a major cause in the growth of BPO sector in India. There was a time when unemployment was a major problem in the country but with BPO industry unemployment has been curbed to a huge extent. Infact many countries have recently waked upto this recent phenomenon in India and are trying to pull BPO jobs towards them but it is highly unlikely that Indian BPO industry would suffer on that account simply because India offers the most favourable conditions for BPO industry and a very strong framework and BPO work culture in India is already in place in comparison to other countries.
The main feature of a BPO job is that the work shift is in accordance with the time zone of the country where the company for which the BPO is handling outsourcing is based. Since the biggest companies using outsourcing are from USA and their time is exactly opposite that of India so their working hours coincide with sleeping hours in India. So for these BPO jobs work usually happens in night shifts. Also in these jobs accent training is given prior to handling live calls. But there are inbound BPO jobs as well where one deals with the India based companies also but generally the opportunities are better with foreign companies.
BPO jobs are mostly popular with the younger generation mainly consisting of graduates and undergraduates. There are technical call based jobs as well where technical knowledge is needed. The personal traits required in the profession are extremely good communication skills, patience, flexibility and a calm attitude. Besides good listening and understanding skills are also very important because most of the time people with which one has to deal with are customers of the company in case of customer care services which are most dominant in the BPO sector. The selection in BPO jobs is hardly based on educational qualifications. Recruitment is based on interview, accent test and virtual call handling. Remunerations offered are quite good in the range of Rs. 12-20 thousand per month for starters in outbound companies.
